Energy saving tips for the kitchen

Use your fridge wisely
- Choose a refrigerator of a size based on the needs of your family
- Keep in mind that a refrigerator uses energy most efficiently when it is filled.
- However, do not overload your fridge; excessive products in your fridge will lower the quality of the food.
- Get into the habit of removing and replacing several articles at once, you will reduce the loss of cold air by opening the fridge less.
- Do not set freezing temperatures lower than necessary especially in the cooler seasons; it wastes as much electricity as excessive heat.
- Thick frost on chilling panels in a fridge or freezer, reduces its cooling ability. So it’s best to remember to defrost when frost is between 0,6cm to 1,3 cm thick.
- Do not open your refrigerator door needlessly.
Use your dishwasher wisely
- Skip the drying cycle on the dishwasher – rather dry your dishes yourself or let them air-dry
- Fill the dish water 100% – half-loads waste electricity and water.
- Use a shorter wash cycle on your dishwasher and washing machine, whenever possible.
Use your electric stove wisely
Electric stoves are heavy users of electricity, so here are some things you could do to reduce your monthly electricity bill:
- Make sure that the pots and pans you use have flat bottoms. This will improve the conductivity between the hot plate and the pot or pan.
- Match the size of the pots and pans with the hot plate.
- Keep the lids on, to avoid wasting heat.
- Do not use more heat than you need to cook food.
- Use a kettle for boiling water, instead of a pot – it’s more efficient.
Use your washing machine wisely
- As much as 85% of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water, so wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.
- A bit of Pressure: use a pressure cooker to conserve energy when cooking foods that take a long time like stews and steamed puddings.
